Mrs. Stager’s photograms are in large part tiny-format and mounted on thick acrylic glass. That’s why they sometimes resemble a piece of cake (what is not meant to be derogatory, but refers to their aesthetic attractiveness). Being maybe even more attractive than the work by Garry Fabian Miller Mrs. Sager’s work doesn’t seem to be dealing with the question about non-representational photography, though.

Frau Stagers Fotogramme sind zum Teil sehr kleinformatig und auf dickem Acrylglas aufgezogen. Sie wirken dadurch manchmal wie Tortenstücke, was nicht abwertend gemeint ist, sondern eher auf ihre große ästhetische Attraktivität verweist. Fast noch attraktiver als die Arbeiten Garry Fabian Millers scheinen mir Frau Stagers Arbeiten sich aber nicht mit der Frage nach nicht gegenständlicher Fotografie auseinander zu setzen.

Garry Fabian Miller, born 1957 in Bristol, England, learnt the photographer’s craft from his father.

While Liz Deschenes‘ works are on the line between being representational and non-representational Garry Fabian Miller crossed this line a long time ago towards non-representational photography. One could consider his work, thanks to the mechanical process of photography, superior to the work of some abstract painters, regarding unity of medium and colour and the non-individual, that is the flow of paint free, representation of the power of colour and form.

Bewegen sich Liz Deschenes‘ Arbeiten noch auf dem Grat zwischen Gegenständlichkeit und Nichtgegenständlichkeit, hat Garry Fabian Miller diesen zur Nichtgegenständlichkeit hin schon lange überschritten. Mit seinen Arbeiten und Dank des mechanischen Prozesses der Fotografie könnte man ihn für so manchem abstrakten Maler überlegen halten, was Einheit von Medium und Farbe und nicht individuelle, also Duktus freie Darstellung der Kraft der Farben und Formen angeht.

Liz Deschenes, born 1966 in Boston, USA, studied Photography at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, USA.

Liz Deschenes’ works are a contribution to the discussion whether photography can be abstract, or rather nonrepresentational, or not. Even if the works from her Screen series appear to be quite similar to the ‘Photographs’ works – they’re both colour fields of different colour and shading – they can hardly be more different: One is representational, the other is abstract. If one assumes a photograph as an impression of light reflected or emitted by an object, the light becomes the decisive factor in the procedure and not the object. If a photo-sensitive material reacts to light that directly comes from a source of light – without a negative or anything similar between, what is the case with photogramms – no object is involved and thus the result nonrepresentational, but still a photograph. This is the case with Mrs. Deschenes’ ‘Photographs’ series. The works of the Screen series are photos of monochromatic backgrounds.

Liz Deschenes‘ Arbeiten sind ein weiterer Beitrag zur Beantwortung der Frage, ob Fotografie abstrakt, oder besser gesagt, nicht gegenständlich, sein kann. Auch wenn die Arbeiten aus ihrer Screen-Serie den Photographs Arbeiten sehr ähnlich scheinen – letztendlich sind beides Farbflächen unterschiedlicher Farbe und Schattierung – können sie unterschiedlicher kaum sein: Die einen sind gegenständlich, die anderen abstrakt. Nimmt man eine Fotografie als Abdruck von Licht an, das von einem Objekt reflektiert oder emittiert wird, so ist das Licht der entscheidende Faktor in dem Verfahren und nicht das Objekt. Wenn ein fotosensibler Stoff also auf Licht reagiert, das direkt von einer Lichtquelle ausgeht – ohne Negativ oder ähnlichem dazwischen, was bei Fotogrammen der Fall ist – ist kein Objekt involviert und das Ergebnis also nicht gegenständlich, aber immer noch eine Fotografie. Bei Frau Deschenes‘ Photographs-Serie ist dies der Fall. Die Arbeiten der Screen-Serie sind letztendlich Fotos von einfarbigen Hintergründen.

Nils Eichberg, born 1961 in Kiel, Germany, studied Architecture in Berlin, Germany.

Mr. Eichberg’s pictures are a bit less astonishing – his videos do remain so – , if one knows that he was educated as an architect: They are quite similar to the works of, for example, the artist of “de Stijl” like van Doesburg or Mondrian. However, Mr. Eichberg’s contribution to the discussion whether photograph can or can not be abstract is especially interesting. Mr. Eichberg succeeds to abstract his material, in spite of a still discernible representation, in such a way that only colour and form, which arise from the original picture, are important. One could think that he’s getting quite close to Piet Mondrian and the visualization of the object’s – here the picture’s – inherent order.

Herrn Eichbergs Bilder sind etwas weniger überraschend – seine Videoarbeiten bleiben es – , wenn man weiß, dass er als Architekt ausgebildet wurde: Sind sie doch den Arbeiten zum Beispiel der „Stijl“-Künstler wie van Doesburg oder Mondrian nicht unähnlich. Besonders interessant ist sein Beitrag aber im Zusammenhang mit der Frage, ob Fotografie abstrakt sein kann oder nicht. Denn Herr Eichberg schafft es, trotz erkennbarer Abbildung, sein Material so zu abstrahieren, dass nur noch die Farben und Formen, die aus demselben entstehen, wichtig sind. Man möchte meinen, dass er sich da sehr Piet Mondrian annähert im Sichtbarmachen einer dem Objekt, hier der Abbildung, innewohnenden Ordnung.

Hans-Christian Schink, born 1961 in Erfurt, Germany, or rather in the former GDR, studied at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, Germany.

Mr. Schink is one of the artists who, like for example Paolo de Pietri, work on distinct subjects in different ways on a high technical level. Latter means in Mr. Schink’s case large format photography (except one series). Please have a look at Wände, LA Night, 1h or the jungle photographs of the Vietnam series.
One may of course argue whether the contribution of an artist, who’s continuously working on one subject, is or is not bigger than the contribution of one, who’s constantly changing – and of course there are works you may compare to Mr. Schink’s work mentioned above – , but to compare them one would have to be able to measure the quality of an artistic work. As I think that this is – on a high quality level – not possible, I do think, too, that a discussion would be idle.
However, I would be glad to learn more about Mr. Schink’s concept. The few reviews of his work seem to copy themselves or Dr. Kai-Uwe Schierz, Director of Kunsthalle Erfurt. Hence, the spectator is kept in uncertainty.

Hans-Christian Schink, 1961 in Erfurt, Deutschland, beziehungsweise in der ehemaligen DDR, geboren, studierte an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, Deutschland.

Herr Schink ist einer der Künstler, die, wie zum Beispiel Paolo de Pietri, verschiedene Themen auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise behandeln und immer auf technisch hohem Niveau, was bei ihm (mit einer Ausnahme) in Großformatfotografien heißt. Seien es nun die Serien, Wände, LA Night, 1h oder die Dschungelaufnahmen der Vietnam Serie.
Man kann natürlich darüber streiten, ob der Beitrag von Künstlern, die beständig an einem Thema arbeiten nicht größer ist – und auch zu den genannten Arbeiten Herrn Schinks gibt es Vergleichbares – , aber, um vergleichen zu können, müsste man erst die Qualität von künstlerischen Beiträgen – ab einem bestimmten hohen Niveau – messen können. Ich halte dies für schwerlich möglich, und diese Diskussion damit für müßig.
Auch bei Herrn Schink würde es mich aber freuen mehr von ihm über seine Arbeit zu erfahren. Sie sind doch sehr konzeptionell. Die wenigen Rezensionen, die es gibt, scheinen alle voneinander, beziehungsweise von Herrn Dr. Kai-Uwe Schierz, Direktor der Kunsthalle Erfurt, abgeschrieben zu sein und der Betrachter bleibt damit etwas im Unklaren.

You may distinguish Paola de Pietri’s works from others because of a quality which in my humble opinion only have the works of the most interesting and, because of that, most important authors: Doing very different kind of work, constantly changing subject and style and still producing work on the highest level and without any loss of quality.

This article by DLK COLLECTION resumes pretty well the thoughts and doubts I had about Mr. Maier-Aichen’s work, too.
Like David Maisel he uses alienated colors and landscape. But I was not able to find any concept that would explain (I don’t want to say ‘justifies’) the intervention on his postcardy pictures.
As his pictures still are very impressive, I’m thinking, perhaps we (or at least I) have to return to the point to make us clear that art, and landscape photography in particular, may ‘only’ strive for the representation of ‘beauty’, not the say ‘the sublime’.

Dieser Artikel von DLK COLLECTION fasst ziemlich gut die Gedanken und Bedenken zusammen, die ich mir auch über Florian Maier-Aichens Arbeit machte, beziehungsweise hatte.
Wie David Maisel arbeitet Florian Maier-Aichen mit verfremdeten Farben und Landschaften. Leider war es mir aber nicht möglich ein Konzept zu finden, das diese Eingriffe in Postkarten-Motive inhaltlich begründete (Ich möchte nicht sagen ‚rechtfertigt‘).
Da die Bilder aber trotzdem unheimlich stark sind, überlege ich, ob wir (oder zumindest Ich) nicht vielleicht zu dem Punkt zurückkehren müssen uns klar zu machen, dass Kunst, und Landschaftsfotografie im Speziellen, auch ‚nur‘ nach der Darstellung des ‚Schönen‘, beziehungsweise des Erhabenen, streben darf.

Emilio Moreno Blanco, born 1980 in Ávila, Spain, studied English Literature at University of Salamanca and received a Master degree in Photography by EFTI School of Photography in Madrid, both in Spain.

Although this work’s motifs and aesthetical concept reminds the spectator of a lot of other works it still fascinates us because of its stringent and by that convincing and modern romanticism. I wasn’t able yet of getting an explanation of the concept. Anyways if you ever have the possibility to see this work in an exhibition you’ll enjoy the good technical realization, which in mi humble opinion still is quite rare in Spain. From fall 2009 on Emilio Moreno is going to study at Dutch Art Institute in Enschede, Holland. We may look forward to see other interesting work and maybe an (online) medium that’ll make it possible to follow.

Emilio Moreno Blanco nació en Ávila en 1980, es licenciado en Filología Inglesa por la Universidad de Salamanca y hizo un máster de Fotografía en EFTI Escuela de Fotografía, Madrid, los tres en España.

Aunque los motivos y el concepto estético recuerdan al espectador varios trabajos conocidos este trabajo fascina gracias a su preciso y por eso convenciendo y moderno romanticismo. Aún no era posible obtener una explicación del concepto. De todas formas si usted tiene la posibilidad de ver este trabajo en una exposición podrá disfrutar de la buena realización técnica. Algo que en mi opinión todavía es desafortunadamente raro en España. A partir de otoño 2009 Emilio Moreno va a estudiar en Holanda en el Dutch Art Institute en Arnhem. Podemos esperar con ilusión nuevos trabajos interesantes y quizás un medio (en línea) por que seguirles.

Because of the distant and slightly higher position of the camera in relation to the motif the picture becomes similar to Abstract Painting, like for example American Colorfield Painting.

Leider war es mir nicht möglich den Lebenslauf des Fotojournalisten Peter DeJongs (AP) ausfindig zu machen. Für einen Hinweis wäre ich dankbar! Auf jeden Fall ist diese Fotografie ein gutes Beispiel für die Technik, die die zum Beispiel auch David Maisel anwendet:
Durch die distanzierte und leicht erhöhte Position der Kamera zum Motiv wird das Abgebildete abstrakter Malerei, wie zum Beispiel dem American Colorfield Painting, ähnlich.

Why is it that galleries fix an exhibition closing date and remove the pictures three days earlier?
Is there any competition of who’s exposing longest? Or at least who is pretending to?!
Especially during PhotoEspaña 2009 this seemed to be quite common. It fits pretty well in the general concept of organization, too: The map that was handed out to foreign visitors left it nearly impossible to find the exhibition venues. Nobody reacted to questions, feedback or critic.
This doesn’t pay much respect neither to the visitor nor to the artist, as many potential spectators were not able of seeing his work.

Warum geben Galerien ein Datum als Ausstellungsende an um dann bereits drei Tage früher abzubauen?
Gibt es da einen Wettbewerb, wer – zumindest auf dem Papier – am längsten ausstellt?
Vor allem im Rahmen von PhotoEspaña 2009 ist dies scheinbar gängige Praxis, und passt auch zur Gesamtorganisation: Der Stadtplan, der verteilt wurde machte es einem nicht ortskundigen Besucher praktisch unmöglich die Ausstellungsorte zu finden. Auf Rückfragen, Anregungen oder Kritik wird gar nicht erst reagiert.
Nicht nur dem interessierten Besucher gegenüber zeugt dies von wenig Respekt, auch gegenüber dem Künstler, dessen Arbeit ja viele mögliche Betrachter nicht sehen werden.

Est-ce qu’il y a un concours de qui fait semblant d’exposer le plus longtemps ?
Surtout pendant PhotoEspaña 2009 c’était une pratique assez courante. Qui allait d’ailleurs parfaitement avec l’organisation générale : Le plan par exemple qu’on donnait aux étrangers le rendait quasi impossible de trouver les lieux d’exposition. À des questions, commentaires ou critiques on ne répondait même pas.
Ça témoigne de peu de respect non seulement envers le visiteur mais aussi envers l’artiste puisque ainsi il y a plein de possibles spectateurs qui ne verront jamais ses travaux.

¿Por qué las galerías fijan una fecha de fin de exposición y desmontan las fotos tres días antes?
Hay una competición de ¿quien pretende exponer lo más tiempo?
Sobre todo durante PhotoEspaña 2009 era una práctica bastante corriente. Que también iba bien con la organización general: El mapa que dieron a los visitantes extranjeros se lo volvía casi imposible de encontrar los lugares de exposición. A preguntas, comentarios o críticas ni contestaron.
No solamente a los visitantes tributa poco respeto sino también al artista cuyos trabajos así no serán vistos por posibles espectadores.

Georg Küttinger is abstracting landscape. By digital alienation he’s getting to structures and color fields that remind us of Franco Fontana’s work. Because of the title and Mr. Küttinger’s architectural background one could suppose that the work is precisely based on existing landscape. Unfortunately this is not the case. Because of this, the digital process and the large number of works which a quite similar to each other one may get the impression of looking at a technical gimmickry even though the work’s concept is very interesting. Maybe you would like to compare with Silvio Wolf’s work.

Georg Küttinger, 1972 in München, Deutschland, geboren, studierte Architektur an der Technischen Universität München.

Georg Küttinger abstrahiert Landschaft per digitale Verfremdung zu den Strukturen und Flächen, die wir ähnlich schon analog bei Franco Fontana sahen. Aufgrund des Titels und da Herr Küttinger aus der Architektur kommt nimmt man an, dass die Arbeiten präzise auf den tatsächlichen Landschaften basieren. Leider ist das nicht der Fall. Dadurch, durch die digitale Umsetzung und die große Zahl der Arbeiten, die sich stark ähneln bekommt man daher leider leicht den Eindruck eine technische Spielerei zu anzuschauen, obwohl die Arbeit inhaltlich sehr spannend ist. Sehen Sie dazu im Vergleich auch Silvio Wolf.

I’m not sure and I couldn’t find out what Claudia Pozzoli’s work is about. I can not really be dealing with landscape or its structure. Anyways it’s quite interesting to look at but unfortunately like this it soon stops appealing to the spectator.

Ich bin mir nicht sicher und konnte nicht erfahren, von was Claudia Pozzolis Arbeit handelt. Es kann ja nicht wirklich um Landschaft oder deren Strukturen gehen. Interessant zu betrachten sind die Arbeiten trotzdem. Verlieren so aber leider bald ihren Reiz.

Yao Lu, born 1967 in Beijing, China, studied at Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and Queensland College of Arts, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia.

Pretty much like Ola Kolehmainen Yao Lu is imitating Painting with photography. Not only the illusion – how our pictorial perception works – is interesting but the intensification of the author’s critic by the imitation of classic Chinese Painting of the 13th and 14th century and by our sudden realization of what really is represented in the pictures.
These classic Chinese paintings didn’t represent existing landscape or nature. The painters learned from older painters and by copying their paintings. These paintings therefore maybe represented ideal but surely not real landscape. Yao Lu’s work is doing the opposite.

Yao Lu, 1967 in Peking, China geboren, studierte an der Central Academy of Fine Arts, Peking, und am Queensland College of Arts, Griffith University in Brisbane, Australien.

Ähnlich Ola Kolehmainen imitiert Yao Lu mit fotografischen Mitteln Malerei. Nicht nur die Illusion ist interessant – wie unsere Bilderwahrnehmung funktioniert – sondern vor allem, dass durch die Imitation der klassischen chinesischen Gemälde und unser plötzliches Erkennen dessen, was wirklich abgebildet ist, die Kritik des Autors, die er mit den Bildern ausdrückt, noch viel stärker wird.
Chinesische Malerei aus dem 13. und 14. Jahrhundert, an die uns diese Bilder erinnern, war kein Abbild der Natur. Die Maler lernten von älteren Malern und deren Gemälden indem sie diese kopierten. Diese Malerei zeigte also vielleicht eine ideale, aber keine existierende Landschaft. Yao Lu dreht dieses Konzept um.

Ola Kolehmainen,  born 1954 in Helsinki, Finland, studied Journalism before studying Photography at University of Art and Design in Helsinki, too.

The aesthetic concept of American Color Field Painting – here after some of Barnett Benedict Newman’s paintings – has been applied through the medium of Photography. The even surface of the canvas that is not apt for representation of realistic, perspectival space, is facing Photography which is not capable of representing by something else than a central perspective something else than what existed in the very particular moment of the shot.

Ola Kolehmainen, 1954 Helsinki, Finnland, geboren, studierte Journalismus bevor er Fotografie an der University of Art and Design ebenfalls in Helsinki studierte.

Das ästhetische Konzept des American Color Field Painting, hier Barnett Benedict Newman, wurde von Ola Kolehmainen mit dem Medium der Fotografie umgesetzt. Die Leinwand, die aufgrund ihrer Flachheit nicht für realistisches, perspektivisches Darstellen geeignet ist, steht der Fotografie, die nicht anders kann als zentralperspektivisch das, was in einem bestimmten Moment existiert hat, abzubilden, gegenüber.

Silvio Wolf, born 1952, in Milan, Italy, studied Philosophy and Psychology in Italy before studying Photography and Visual Arts at London College of Printing, England.

Obviously this work is no landscape photography. Nevertheless, Silvio Wolf has the intention to create a connection with landscape photography – which would be obvious anyways – by using the title ‚Horizon‘. Probably it would be best not to know that this work ‘just’ consists of the ends of rolls of film. It would stay impossible and by that exciting trying to decrypt what these color fields are really representing.
It’s absolutely necessary that this work is created in an analogue process: Done digitally the pictures would seem random. Even though it’s hard to explain why, as these dark room pictures still are created by chance like it would be the case if they were done with a digital tool like Photoshop, but they are ‘convincing’ us.

Silvio Wolf, 1952 in Mailand, Italien, geboren, studierte Philosophie und Psychologie in Italien bevor er am London College of Printing Fotografie und Visual Arts studierte.

Natürlich ist diese Arbeit nicht der Landschaftsfotografie zuzuordnen. Trotzdem stellt Silvio Wolf mit dem Titel ‚Horizon‘ absichtlich einen Bezug her, der auch ohne den Titel offensichtlich gewesen wäre. Wahrscheinlich wäre es besser nicht zu erfahren, dass es sich bei der Arbeit ‚lediglich‘ um geprintete Enden von Filmrollen handelt. Es wäre unmöglich und spannende geblieben entschlüsseln zu wollen, was diese Farbflächen tatsächlich darstellen.
Unerlässlich für diese Arbeit ist aber, dass sie analog erstellt wurde: Digital wär sie nicht überzeugend, weil sie uns beliebig erschiene. Obwohl schwerlich zu begründen ist weshalb. Analog entstehen die Bilder genauso zufällig, wie es auch der Fall bei einem digitalen Werkzeug wäre.

Franco Fontana, born 1933 in Modena, Italy, started to work as an amateur photographer in 1961.

Although the visual concept is quite different, this series is still pretty similar to David Maisel’s work. Again we look at photos taken from a distant point of view that turns landscape into color fields like in abstract paintings.

Franco Fontana, 1933 in Modena, Italien, geboren, begann 1961 als Amateurfotograf zu arbeiten.

Wieder eine Arbeit, die, wenn das ästhetischen Konzept auch anders ist, der Arbeit David Maisels sehr ähnlich ist. Wieder sehen wir Aufnahmen aus größerer Distanz, die die Landschaft den Farbflächen in abstrakten Gemälden ähnlich werden lässt.

Once again being annoyed by some ‘fancy’ photographer’s websites I was just about to write an article about portfolio website design. Fortunately I’m always checking Jörg Colberg’s blog. Of course he already wrote something about the subject: Web Design (Somehow this reminds me of the South Park episode ‘Simpsons Alread Did it‘…) Anyways his post is great and I’d just like to contribute by resuming and translating in the following what to me are the principal points:

• Navigational elements should be easy to find and use! Please don’t use elements that move on their own or depending on how you move your mouse cursor!
• Websites should load fast. Please avoid unnecessary content! Like intros or things like that.
• Please don’t use pop-ups!
• Please do not use neither music nor sound effects!
• Dead links or E-mail addresses are horribly unprofessional. (It’s impressive how many galleries’ E-mail addresses don’t work…)

Da ich mich wieder einmal über ‘aufregende’ Internetseiten von Fotografen aufgeregt hatte, war ich gerade dabei einen Artikel über Webportfolio Design zu schreiben. Zum Glück schauen ich immer auf Jörg Colbergs Blog. Natürlich hat er schon etwas über das Thema geschrieben: Web Design (Irgendwie erinnert mich das an die South Park Folge ‘Simpsons Alread Did it‘…) Wie auch immer sein Artikel ist großartig und ich möchte nur gerne etwas dazu beitragen indem ich versuche zusammenzufassen und die mir wichtigsten Punkte zu übersetzen:

• Bedienelemente sollten bitte klar und einfach zu finden und zu benutzen sein! Bitte also keine sich von alleine oder mit dem Mauszeiger bewegenden Elemente einbauen!
• Die Seiten sollten schnell laden. Also bitte unnötigen Inhalt vermeiden! Wie Intros oder ähnliches.
• Bitte keine Pop-Ups!
• Bitte keine Musik oder Sound-Effekte hinzufügen!
• Tote Links oder E-Mail-Adressen sind schrecklich unprofessionell. (Es ist beeindruckend wie viele E-Mail-Adresse von Galerien nicht funktionieren…)

Puisque j’étais encore une fois embêté par des sites d’Internet ‘extraordinaires’ de quelques photographes, j’étais juste en train d’écrire un article sur le design des portfolios en ligne. Heureusement que je jette toujours un coup d’œil sur le blog de Jörg Colberg. Évidemment il a déjà écrit un article sur le sujet: Web Design (Je ne sais pas pourquoi mais ça me rappelle l’épisode de South Park ‘Simpsons Alread Did it‘…) De toute façon son article est très bien et j’aimerais seulement contribuer quelque chose en résumant et traduisant ceux qui me semblent les points les plus importants:

• S’il vous plaît, les éléments pour naviguer sur le site devraient être facile à trouver et à utiliser! Ne utilisez pas d’élément qui bouge tout seul ou suivant le deplacement du curseur!
• Les sites devraient charger rapidement. Évitez le contenu inutile. Des intros ou de choses comme ça!
• S’il vous plaît, pas de fenêtre popup!
• S’il vous plaît, pas de musique ou des effets sonores!
• Les liens et les adresse e-mail qui ne fonctionnent pas ne sont pas très professionnelles! (C’est impressionnant combien d’adresse e-mail des galeries ne marchent pas…)

Como estaba de nuevo molestado por unas páginas web ‘extraordinarias’ de fotógrafos, estuve al punto de escribir un artículo sobre el diseño de los porfolios on-lines. Por suerte siempre echo un vistazo al blog de Jörg Colberg. Evidentemente el ya antes ha escrito un artículo sobre el tema: Web Design (No sé porque pero me recuerda el capítulo de South Park ‘Simpsons Alread Did it‘…) De todas formas su artículo está muy bien y solamente querría contribuir algo resumiendo y traduciendo los puntos que me parecen los más importantes:

• Por favor usen elementos para navegar que se encuentren y utilizen facilmente! No usen elementos que se muevan sólo o según el movimiento del cursor del ratón!
• Las páginas deben cargar rapidamente. Eviten el contenido inútil. Los intros y cosas parecidas.
• Por favor no usen pop-ups!
• Por favor no pongan música o effectos sonores en la página!
• Los enlaces y las direcciónes electrónicas que no funcionan no son muy profesionales! (Es impresionante cuantas direcciónes eletrónicas de galerias no funcionan…)

Frederick Bell, born 1957 in Nottinghamshire, Great Britain, studied at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham, and University of Dundee, both Great Britain. He’s currently living in Brussels, Belgium.

Leaving the process of creation visible Mr. Bell is painting pictures of photos he took of ordinary situations. This is kind of the opposite of what José Manuel Ballester is doing. A mix of photography and painting is created that makes it quite difficult to distinguish the art forms.

Frederick Bell, né en 1957 à Nottinghamshire, Grande-Bretagne, a fait ses études a Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham, et University of Dundee, les deux en Grande-Bretagne. Actuellement il vit à Bruxelles, Belgique.

Frederick Bell fait des peintures d’après des situations ordinaires qi’il a pris en photo. Tout en laissant apparaitre le processus de son travail. C’est plus ou moins le contraire de ce que fait José Manuel Ballester. Un mélange de peinture et de photographie est créé qui nous le rend assez dificil de decider laquelle des deux formes d’art c’est.

‘Words and Photos: Literature and Photography’ Are two pendulums or like coffee and cake?

From June 4 to 6 the ‘VII Discussions on Photography’ took place as part of PhotoEspaña 2009 in Madrid, Spain. Well, in fact there wasn’t much discussion. The event – except for its delicious coffee and cake buffet – was rather similar to a university lecture: Important professors gave captivating talks about interesting things (There’s really no irony here!).
Unfortunately there wasn’t that much connection between the subjects of the talks. Much was said about photography and about literature, Roland Barthes was discussed, Susan Sontag mentioned, Walter Benjamin, too, even on slightly altered personal philosophies was touched. From their wealth of experience – if not disturbed by some translation problems – the speakers, for example Ferdinando Scianna, offered: ‘photography is reading not writing’ and ‘photography is a tale, unlike painting, for example’, Federico Campbell even surprisingly told us that ‘photographic fiction does not exist’. Hm, OK. But why? I really do hope it’s not presumptuous to expect discussions being part of a photo festival to help one – with of course less experience than the speakers – who is still working in the broad field of photography to advance in the understanding of his field by giving him reasons and conclusions and not just separate facts and phrases!? There were already a lot of these during break at the buffet…

‘The best of all novels couldn’t compete with our family album.’, Günter Grass was quoted by Antonio Ansón in his listing of bibliographical references. Philippe Ortel was the first speaker to make us think if Grass was right. Mr. Ortel talked about autobiographies as a possible joint application of photography and literature. Being an intimate act photography may reveal the truth about family members and their relations – Marianne Hirsch mentioned before – but why do photographers write their autobiography, as Jane M. Rabb later depicted, and why aren’t they photographing it, if Grass is right?!
Mr. Ortel explanation was that private photography is ‘locking up’. Even if we still weren’t able – after soon to be 200 years of photography history – to decide if ordinary photography does exist or not – because we can’t distinguish it, as Claude Ambroise said – we surely can agree with Mr. Ortel that by looking at photographs we miss the ‘virtualities’ of the moment we took the picture of. We lose the possibilities of the moment the picture can’t contain. That’s why ‘photography is a disappointment’ (Like maybe a speaker who only reads his text starring at a paper in front of him).
But does Literature work better? Was Günter Grass wrong? Aren’t we losing ‘virtualities’, too, maybe even more, when we try to retell an event in words? – In the author’s humble opinion: Yes. Look at this text it’s the best example! – Unfortunately Mr. Ortel couldn’t answer this question. He said he’d need some time to think.

Maybe as a unity photography and literature are able to provide more of these virtualities. Fumetti, or photonovels, were created at the same time as cinema. Jan Baetens presented in an inspiring talk this interesting but poorly considered art form. Traditionally fumetti copied cinema. Today they copy literature, have new narrative models and text may even be absent. One doesn’t even know any more if it’s photography or a novel. They seem to be the first true example of photography and literature as one, a symbiosis, and not just as two media standing next to each other in one art form. But still we don’t know what literature is capable of what photography isn’t. And vice versa. What can they provide? Why do fumetti sometimes seem to work and sometimes not? Can literature and photography complete and strengthen each other or – when forced into one art form – are they taking each other’s energy and strength away, bouncing back and forward and against eacht other, like two pendulums of a Newton’s Cradle? What about photo books which appear not to sell if there isn’t any text in it, because people looking at it in passing got the impression of having seen everything, as Gérard Macé claimed, and what are the rules of great book or magazine design – Alberto Bianda presented – and the interaction of photos and text in it?!
All these questions aren’t just hollow and technical. Art is based on technique. You’re not able to create something if you don’t know the technique to do it. Scientists working on this subject since years could have given us some more conclusions or at least could have told us if there’s no answer to the question: So we won’t spend too much time thinking about it. Due to that Alberto Gracía-Alix’ talk was the perfect closure and resume of the Encuentros PHE: He proved that of course words and photos even standing next to each other may create something strong and delicious. His poetic explanations of his photographs helped us not to be so helpless with his vast photos. – Maybe that’s the hint!? – The image keeps a secret the word is developing, he said, and he seems to be right. But why and how and what we have to do to get there we couldn’t find out this weekend before we all left again for coffee and cake.

José Manuel Ballester, born 1960 in Madrid, Spain, got a degree in Fine Arts by Universidad Complutense de Marid, Spain.

Being a painter, too, Mr. Ballester is working on the intersection of photography and painting. His last work ‘Espacios Ocultos’ are photographs of famous paintings of Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, which he altered by digitally deleting all representations of living beings.

To me this works isn’t too far away from David Maisel’s, for example. Both are examples of photography appearing to be painting.

José Manuel Ballester nació en Madrid, España, en 1960, es licenciado en Bellas Artes por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España.

Como es también pintor José Manuel Ballester trabaja en la intersección de la fotografía y la pintura. Su último trabajo ‘Espacios Ocultos’ consiste en fotos de cuadros fomosos del Museo Nacional del Prado que ha alterado borrando digitalmente toda representación de seres vivos.

Su trabajo no me parece muy lejos del trabajo de David Maisel por ejemplo. Ambos son ejemplos de fotografía que parece pintura.

The documentary concept of his work is quite similar to David Maisel’s. Again some photographs appear to be paintings, especially the ones shot from higher positions. I’m going to do some research which conditions have to be satisfied to attain this look. And if it’s just because of position and distance.

Das inhaltliche Konzept seiner Arbeit ist dem David Maisels sehr ähnlich. Bei manchen Fotografien, vor allem jenen, die aus einer sehr erhöhten Position aufgenommen wurden, tritt wieder das Phänomen auf, dass die Fotografien wie Gemälde wirken. Ich werde etwas recherchieren, welche Bedingungen dafür erfüllt sein müssen und ob es nur an der Position und Distanz liegt.

I’m surprised I couldn’t find any source talking about the fact that David Maisel’s other work ‘Terminal Mirage’ at first sight appears to be abstract painting. A subject that seems very interesting to me if it’s done with photography. Furthermore the work is pointing out a current problem in an intelligent and critical way without riding the high horse. I’m so excited to learn more about all this I even ordered one of the last exhibition catalogue copies somewhere in the USA…

Ich bin überrascht keine Quelle zu David Maisels andere Arbeit ‘Terminal Mirage’ gefunden zu haben, die über das Malerische der Fotografien spricht: Wenn ich die Fotos betrachte, sehe ich zuallererst abstrakte Malerei. Ein Thema, das – umgesetzt mit dem Medium der Fotografie – mich besonders interessiert. Dazu kommt bei dieser Arbeit, dass sie ein kritischer und intelligenter Hinweis auf ein aktuelles Problem ist, ohne den Zeigefinger zu heben. Ich bin so gespannt mehr zu erfahren, dass ich eines der letzten Exemplare des Ausstellungskataloges irgendwo in den USA bestellt habe…

David Maisel, born 1961 in New York City, USA, studied at Princeton University, California College of the Arts, San Francisco, and Harvard Graduate School of Design, Cambridge, all USA.

The work ‘Oblivion’ could be considered as the next step coming from Detlef Orlopp’s work. First nature, now man-made landscape. Other skin furrows. The altered tonalities do not annoy me as they usually do. Thanks to them the spectator rather contemplates the photographs in a different way than he would normally contemplate ‘common’ aerial photography.

Die Arbeit ‘Oblivion’ könnte man als nächsten Schritt von der Arbeit Detlef Orlopps aus gehend sehen. Nach der Natur, jetzt das vom Menschen Gemachte. Andere Furchen in der Haut. Die verfremdete Tonalität stört mich hier überrasschenderweise nicht. Es ist wohl vielmehr ihr zu verdanken, dass man sich etwas mehr Gedanken über die Fotografien macht, als sie nur als ‘einfache’ Luftaufnahmen zu betrachten.

Detlef Orlopp, born 1937 in Elbing, today Poland, studied at Werkkunstschule Saarbrücken and Folkwang Hochschule Essen, both Germany. Since 1973 Professor at Fachhochschule Niederrhein in Krefeld, Germany.

Detlef Orlopp’s work is even greater than Íñigo Calles‘ work, because it’s more consistent and diverse at the same time. These structures are fascinating me. Like old and deep skin furrows. Or like paintings: have a look at some of French artist Vicky Colombet’s work for example. It’s a pity when Mr. Orlopp points out what we are looking at by showing us hilltops. That takes some of the pictures’ magic away.

Detlef Orlopps Arbeit scheint mir noch gelungener, weil konsequenter und gleichzeitig vielfältiger, als die Arbeit Íñigo Calles‘. Diese Strukturen faszinieren mich. Wie Furchen in einer alten Haut. Oder auch Gemälde, zum Beispiel der französischen Künstlerin Vicky Colombet. Fast schade finde ich es in diesem Zusammenhang dann, wenn die Kuppen der Hügel zu erkennen sind und dem ganzen etwas des Zaubers nehmen.

Íñigo Calles, born 1953 in San Sebastián, Spain, learned photography techniques taught by his father and as an autodidact.

Being another evidence for the more artistic style of southern European photographers Íñigo Calles impressed me with his work ‘desnudos’ and how he manages to show forestal structure. Maybe even better than Daniel Gustav Cramer or Ricarda Roggan, although in black and white it seems much easier to me to handle, too. Anyway this work surprise as Mr. Calles’ other works got a pretty romantic air…

Íñigo Calles nació en San Sebastián, España, en 1953 y aprendió fotografía de mano de su padre y como autodidacta.

El trabajo ‘desnudo’ de Íñigo Calles es otra prueba para el estílo más artístico de los fotógrafos del sur de Europa. Me ha impresionado mucho como logra mostrar la estructura del bosque. Quizás aun mejor que Daniel Gustav Cramer o Ricarda Roggan, aunque me parezca también más fácil hacerlo en blanco y negro. Todavía este trabajo me sorpresa porque los otros de Íñigo Calles son bastante romaticos…

Wäre es kindisch sich zu wundern, warum diese Arbeit und jene von Ricarda Roggan (beide von 2008) sich so sehr ähneln?! In Anbetracht dessen, dass beide Fotografen am Royal College of Art studiert haben…

All of her works I know are beautiful and technically and artistically perfect. But something is missing. I think that something is what’s always missing – as far as I can see right know – with photographic series that work like archives: It’s missing the thing beyond. The thing that is trying to tell me or make me fell something that goes further than the intention of showing me how things really are.

Ricarda Roggan, 1972 in Dresden, Deutschland, geboren, studierte an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, Deutschland, und am Royal College of Art in London, England.

Die Arbeiten, die ich von ihr kenne, sind technisch und gestalterisch perfekt und wunderschön. Aber irgendetwas fehlt mir. Ich denke, es ist dass, was mir bei – soweit ich das im Moment sehen kann – allen Arbeiten fehlt, die wie ein Archiv funktionieren: Es fehlt mir das, was darüber hinaus geht. Das was mich die Arbeit sonst noch begreifen oder fühlen lassen möchte, außer mir die Dinge zeigen zu wollen, wie sie sind.

To start this blog I was searching my archives for a french photographer who’s work resembles the documentary, urban works I posted before. Well, I found none. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems to me that french photographers – and maybe photographers from souther european countries in general – protected themselves very well from this German so-called ‘Objectivity’. Is there any connection to Second World War?! Mrs. Bonvin is french Swiss…

Pour commencer ce blog je voulais trouver un photographe français qui fait des travaux dans le même stile que les photographes que j’ai posté avant: Documentaire et urbain. J ‘ai fait une récherche dans mes archives, mais ben, je n’ai rien trouvé! Corrigez-moi si je me trompe mais il me semble que les photographes français – et aussi tous les autres photographes des pays du sud de l’Europe – se sont bien protegés de l’influence de cette soi-disant  ‘objectivité’ allemande. Est-ce qu’il y a une relation avec la deuxième guerre mondiale ici?! Laurence Bonvin est suisse française…

Peter Bialobzeski born 1961 in Wolfsburg, Germany, studied Politics and Sociology before studying Photography at Folkwang Hochschule Essen, Germany, and at London College of Printing, England. Since 2002 he’s Professor at University of the Arts Bremen, Germany.

His work ‘Neontigers’ is still one of my favorite works ever. It’s intelligent, critical, interesting and visually very attractive. In my humble opinion a (conceptual) work just can’t be ‘better’.

Peter Bialobrzeski, 1961 in Wolfsburg, Deutschland, geboren, studierte zuerst Politk und Soziologie bevor er an der Folkwang Hochschule Essen, Deutschland, und am London College of Printing, England, Fotografie studierte. Seit 2002 ist er Professor an der Hochschule für Künste Bremen, Deutschland.

Seine Arbeit ‘Neontigers’ ist immer noch eine meiner absoluten Lieblingsarbeiten. Sie ist intelligent, kritisch, lehreich und vor allem visuell mehr als attraktiv. Meiner Meinung nach kann eine (konzeptuelle) Arbeit einfach nicht ‘besser’ sein.

Rubén Acosta, born 1976 in Lanzarote, Spain, got a degree in Audiovisual Comunication by Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a Master in Photography by EFTI Escuela de Fotografía, both Madrid, Spain.

Just won the 1st ACCIONA Sustainability Photography Prize at MADRIDFOTO 2009.

His work reminds me a lot of Peter Bialobrzeski’s work ‘Neontiger’ although it’s visually pretty much the opposite. Maybe we could call it ‘Neontigers revisited during financial crisis’ or something like that. It’s shot in China and shows apart from urban architecture some street photography scenes that I don’t like so much: They’re simply by far not as clear and impressive as the others…

Rubén Acosta nació en Lanzarote, España, en 1976, es licenciado en Ciencias de la Imagen por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y tiene un Máster de Fotografía de EFTI Escuela de Fotografía, los dos en Madrid, España.

Acaba de obtener el Premio ACCIONA a la mejor fotografía sobre sostenibilidad en MADRIDFOTO 2009.

Su trabajo me recuerda el trabajo ‘Neontigers’ de Peter Bialobrzeski. Aunque tiene un aspecto bastante contrario. Quizás podemos llamarlo ‘Neontigers visitados durante la crisis financiera’ o algo así. Hecho en China el trabajo muestra aparte de arquitectura urbana unas fotografías de calle que a mi me gustan mucho menos que los demás. Simplemente no son tan impresionantes y claros.

Vor allem, aber natürlich auf keinen Fall ausschließlich, an Studenten und junge Professionelle gerichtet, möchte das Blog den Austausch, der zwischen europäischen Fotografen noch kaum passiert, und das gemeinsame Sehen und Denken fördern.
Jeder der Interesse hat selbst etwas vorzustellen oder über etwas zu diskutieren, also selbst Beiträge zu verfassen, ist herzlich willkommen. Die Beiträge sollten zumindest auf Englisch und im besten Fallen zusätzlich noch in der Muttersprache des Verfassers oder in der Muttersprache des Fotografen sein – Falls diese nicht Englisch ist…
Da der Umgang mit dem Urheberrecht im Internet immer noch schwierig und unklar ist, möchte ich Sie, falls in irgendeiner Weise ein Urheberrecht verletzt wird, im Voraus um Entschuldigung bitten und um Bescheid, dass ich den betroffenen Artikel sofort lösche. Vielen Dank,

Ce blog voudrait bien être une plate-forme de la photographie européenne.
On veut présenter et discuter ouvertement des travaux photographiques. Saisissez alors l’occasion et faites des commentaires ! (S’il le faut les commentaires seront traduits vers l’anglais.) Avant tout, mais  pas seulement, destiné aux étudiants et aux jeunes professionnels, ce blog voudrait cultiver l’échange entre les photographes européens, ce qui est toujours assez rare, autant que la contemplation et la réflexion communes.
Ceux qui sont aussi intéressés de présenter ou de discuter de quelque chose sont les bienvenus. Les articles devraient être écrits au moins en anglais et dans le meilleur des cas aussi dans la langue maternelle de l’auteur ou dans celle du photographe – si celle-ci n’est pas l’anglais…
A cause des difficultés et de la complexité de l’application des droits d’auteur sur Internet, je vous demande pardon á l’avance si d’une manière ou d’une autre un droit d’auteur était violé. S’il vous plaît contactez moi dans ce cas que je puisse effacer l’article concerné immédiatement. Merci,

Este blog pretende ser una plataforma para la fotografía europea.
Queremos presentar y discutir abiertamente trabajos fotográficos. Así que ¡hay que disfrutar de la posibilidad de hacer comentarios! (En caso necesario los comentarios serán traducidos al inglés.) Sobre todo, pero no exclusivamente, destinado a los estudiantes y a los jóvenes profesionales, este blog querría promover el intercambio entre los fotógrafos europeos, que todavía es bastante raro,  como la contemplación y la reflexión comunes.
Todos los que están interesados en presentar o discutir algo son muy bienvenidos. Los artículos deberían ser escritos por lo menos en inglés y por lo mejor también en la lengua materna del autor o del fotógrafo – si ésta no es el inglés…
