Stefan Heyne, born 1965 in Brandenburg, studied Scenography at Kunsthochschule Weißensee in Berlin, both Germany.

It’s not easy for me to see a philosophical reflection on the Medium of Photography in the ,disappearance and appearance (of the objects)’ – as Stefan Heyne wrote me. I can’t get past their blurred representation!
After all not as blurred photographs, but – as Gregory Knight already described – as work based on photographs these pictures become powerful; i.e. only when they are no longer seen or can be seen as photographs.
As pure form, completely detached from the represented objects (even in the titles), they develop the suggestive power reviews often speak about, the power that is essential to Stefan Heyne.

Es fällt mir nicht leicht, eine philosophische Reflexion auf das Medium der Fotografie im ‚Verschwinden und Auftauchen (der Gegenstände)‘ – wie Stefan Heyne mir schrieb – zu erkennen: Zu sehr bleibe ich an der unscharfen Abbildung hängen.
Stark sind die Bilder schließlich nicht als unscharfe Fotografien, sondern, wie bereits Gregory Knight beschrieb, als auf Fotografien basierende Arbeiten; also erst, wenn sie nicht mehr als Fotografien erlebt werden, beziehungsweise erleben werden können.
Als reine Form, ganz von den Gegenständen (auch in den Titeln) gelöst, entwickeln sie die suggestive Kraft, von der in Rezensionen oft gesprochen wird und die für Stefan Heyne entscheidend ist.

Carlos Irijalba, born 1979 in Pamplona, Spain, studied at Pamplona School of Art, University of Basque Country, both Spain, and Berlin University of the Arts, Germany.

The main part of the project Twilight was the construction of a floodlight in the forest Irati, a nature reserve which is situated between Spain and France. The work consists of the installation and its documentation.
Carlos Irijalba wants to ‘analyze the construction of reality‘. The light, as a constituent element of reality of entertainment (esp. espectáculo), is used to turn the attention to a place that is not part of the ‘area’ used by man (esp. ‘circuito’). ‘The forest doesn’t exist’ in this area, Carlos wrote me.
However, I think – and he agreed – that this forest is part of the ‘circuito’, too. Since it’s marked and limited and used by man in order to provide him the experience of nature which as well is some kind of entertainment. So it wouldn’t be correct to say that the forest doesn’t exist. We can rather see it now, thanks to the lights, as it really is: Something made by man in order to entertain him. And I think this is the work’s message.

To exhibit the night shots of the forest independently may become a problem, as one won’t look beyond their visual attractiveness. It becomes obligatory to exhibit all parts of the work at the same time to make the concept become clear.

Carlos Irijalba nació en Pamplona en 1979 y es licenciado en Bellas Artes por la Escuela de Arte de Pamplona y la Universidad del País Vasco, España. Finaliza su licenciatura en la Universidad de Bellas Artes de Berlín, Alemania.

La parte principal del proyecto Twilight fue la construcción de una torre de iluminación en la selva de Irati, una reserva natural situada en Navarra, España. El trabajo consiste en la instalación y la documentación correspondiente.
Carlos Irijalba pretende ‘[analizar] la construcción de realidad‘. La iluminación, como aparato constructor de la realidad espectacular, está usada para focalizar la atención en un lugar que no forma parte del ‘circuito’, lo que es el espacio utilizado por el hombre. ‘El bosque no existe’ en este espacio, dice Carlos.
Sin embargo, yo pienso – y él me dio la razón – que este bosque también forma parte del ‘circuito’. Es delimitado y usado por el hombre con el fin de proporcionarle la oportunidad de experimentar la naturaleza, lo que también puede ser considerado un espectáculo.
Por eso no sería correcto decir que el bosque no existe. Más bien podemos verlo ahora, gracias a la iluminación, como es realmente: Hecho por el hombre con motivos de recreación. En mi opinión es este el trasfondo verdadero del trabajo.

El mostrar las fotos del bosque de noche independientemente del resto del material, puede transformarse por su atractivo visual en un obstáculo para la claridad del concepto total.

(I’m tempted to say) ‘finally’ a photographer is taking a close look at the special look of digital photography, which one tends to call ‘painterly’, what it’s, however, of course not. Since here it rather concerns an independent stylistic device which still is to be maxed out.

Virginie Otth, née en 1971 à Lausanne, Suisse, a fait ses études a l’École de Photographie de Vevey en Suisse.

(Je suis tenté de dire) ‘enfin’ un photographe s’intéresse au caractère esthétique de la photographie numérique, qu’on a tendance à appeler ‘pictural’, bien que ça ne soit pas du tout ça. Il s’agit au contraire plutôt d’un moyen stylistique indépendante qui est toujours à découvrir.

Nicki Stager, born 1978 in Wellsboro, USA, holds an Master of Art Education and studied Graphic Design and Photography at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Mrs. Stager’s photograms are in large part tiny-format and mounted on thick acrylic glass. That’s why they sometimes resemble a piece of cake (what is not meant to be derogatory, but refers to their aesthetic attractiveness). Being maybe even more attractive than the work by Garry Fabian Miller Mrs. Sager’s work doesn’t seem to be dealing with the question about non-representational photography, though.

Nicki Stager, 1978 in Wellsboro, USA, geboren, erwarb einen Master in Kunsterziehung und studierte Grafik Design und Fotografie an der Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Frau Stagers Fotogramme sind zum Teil sehr kleinformatig und auf dickem Acrylglas aufgezogen. Sie wirken dadurch manchmal wie Tortenstücke, was nicht abwertend gemeint ist, sondern eher auf ihre große ästhetische Attraktivität verweist. Fast noch attraktiver als die Arbeiten Garry Fabian Millers scheinen mir Frau Stagers Arbeiten sich aber nicht mit der Frage nach nicht gegenständlicher Fotografie auseinander zu setzen.

Garry Fabian Miller, born 1957 in Bristol, England, learnt the photographer’s craft from his father.

While Liz Deschenes‘ works are on the line between being representational and non-representational Garry Fabian Miller crossed this line a long time ago towards non-representational photography. One could consider his work, thanks to the mechanical process of photography, superior to the work of some abstract painters, regarding unity of medium and colour and the non-individual, that is the flow of paint free, representation of the power of colour and form.

Bewegen sich Liz Deschenes‘ Arbeiten noch auf dem Grat zwischen Gegenständlichkeit und Nichtgegenständlichkeit, hat Garry Fabian Miller diesen zur Nichtgegenständlichkeit hin schon lange überschritten. Mit seinen Arbeiten und Dank des mechanischen Prozesses der Fotografie könnte man ihn für so manchem abstrakten Maler überlegen halten, was Einheit von Medium und Farbe und nicht individuelle, also Duktus freie Darstellung der Kraft der Farben und Formen angeht.
